Chapter Ten

But Rick, so sweet, had given it all over to her. Left the choice in her hands. He was no demonic monster looking to corrupt her. He was a lonely soul who had found karmic unity the moment he’d looked her in the eye.

Though he was a victim-made vampire, he wasn’t doing it to her to cause her anguish. She felt that intuitively.

He said, “With this blood exchange, you can fight all your demons, Mira, and I will help you. And I will never let anyone else hurt you.” He urged, “Taste it. Feel the strength.”

She didn’t want to. A part of her soul fought the urge. But she trusted him. It was insane, she knew, to trust a guy she’d known for two days, who was involved in a murder and an attack or two that had turned bloody. But, hell, she had nothing but him and what he offered her.

No job. No car. No one else to turn to. And soon, no apartment. She couldn’t carry her belongings on her back, could she?

He had opened a vein that ran freely. Blood now covered her chin and neck and dribbled down to the bed, making her hair wet. The scent wafted around them.

As another wave of pain doubled her, Mira decided she didn’t want to fight it any more. She opened her mouth and turned like a bird toward its mother’s beak—to the trickling fluid. She closed her eyes and let it fill her mouth and slide down her throat. Within seconds, her stomach stopped lurching.

Rick put his wrist closer to her lips, and let her suck where no more would be lost. At first, it was a baby’s suckling, but the urge to bite into his flesh came, and her teeth sensitized. She went with the urge.

He winced, of course, at the rough gouging. But then, he put his head back and closed his eyes and said, “That’s what I’m talking about. Go ahead, suck. Take it all.”

She planned to. Why it tasted good to her, she didn’t understand, except that something he’d done in biting her had caused a change within. She craved what he had, and she wanted all of it.

Rick didn’t try to stop her, either. But as she grew full, her eyes watched his glaze over. His lips quirked in that sexy grin of his, and he asked, “Does the sun shine onto your bed in the mornings?”

Abruptly, the compendium of vampire knowledge made itself known to her. Daylight was a bad thing, wasn’t it? All the legends said so. And he looked so happy, to be...maybe dying at her hand after a fuck-and-suck.

Something was distinctly wrong with this picture. She frowned and forced herself to disengage her teeth. Blood dribbled over her lips. She licked and sucked it up, then plied a lick to his wrist, before asking, “What are you thinking? That we’ll die here together like lovers, to be found,” her gaze went over his body—okay, she had to admit he had washboard abs, better than Grant—“I’m not gonna die here, tonight.
